The magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Wellington in the early hours of Sunday morning. On Sunday evening, the Victoria Lane Apartments in Victoria Street were cordoned off and residences evacuated "as a safety precaution", police said. That was over "concerns there may be structural damage".

An apartment block in central Wellington was evacuated overnight after some residents reported “shaking in the building”. Fire and Emergency Central shift manager Murray Dunbar said it received reports late last night that “could indicate structural damage” at a residential apartment complex on Victoria St.
