A weakened and "weird" Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, forcing a second day of closures in financial markets, while grounding hundreds of flights and having led to two deaths.

Taiwan shut down schools and offices for a second day Thursday as Typhoon Krathon pounded the island before its expected landfall, leaving two dead and more than 100 injured.

Typhoon Krathon has crossed Taiwan's coast at the major port city of Kaohsiung, packing maximum sustained winds of 126km/h near its centre, with gusts of 162km/h. The slow-moving typhoon has doused eastern and southern parts of the island during the past five days, forcing thousands to leave mountainous or low-lying areas.

Krathon hit land in the southwestern city of Kaohsiung, inundating streets, blowing out the windows of some buildings and scattering debris amid record-breaking winds.
